August 27, 2002

Opening Convocation and Reception, September 3:

  • All students are expected to attend the Opening Convocation on Tuesday, September 3 at 2:15 pm in the Fieldhouse. Classes are cancelled from 2:15 - 4:00 p.m.
  • By Thursday, August 29:

  • Complete the Syllabus Discussion Questions to turn in at the beginning of class on Thursday.
  • Complete the Questionaire (true/false statements), due at the beginning of class on Thursday.
  • Read over the Activities for Chapter 1, pages 1 - 2. We will work in groups on the Activities for this chapter during class on Thursday.
  • By Tuesday, September 3: Read Chapter 1.

  • We will discuss some of the exercises on pages 9 - 11 in class on Tuesday. Think about exercise #3 - 9 before coming to class.
  • Write out responses to exercises #11, 12, 14, 15, and 19, pages 9 - 10 to turn in on Tuesday.
  • By noon on Wednesday, September 4:

  • Write a personal essay in which you discuss three to five significant events in your mathematical life up to the present. How has each of these events helped to shape your mathematical life? Email your essay to me at breynolds@stritch.edu by noon on Wednesday, September 4. Begin the subject line with "Mt 322" and include your name on the subject line. (Note: Part of the point of this assignment is to be sure that everyone in the class can communicate with me by email, so it is not acceptable to type your essay and hand it in on paper.)

    By Thursday, September 5: Re-read Chapter 1.

  • We will discuss more of the exercises (pages 9 - 11) in class on Thursday. (Chapter 2 will be available by this time, and handed out in class on Thursday.)
